Ice and Water Shield products are specially designed underlayments for use on steep and low slope roofing applications. Our roofing companys has been a strong promoter and installer of these self-adhered membranes as an additional layer of protection under composition roofing shingles. They can prevent moisture intrusion from ice dams and wind-driven rain along with providing waterproofing on low pitched roofs. Our professional roofers use these underlayments in valleys, around skylight and chimney flashings, and under sheet metal flashing details.
Our roofers are careful when installing an ice and water shield membrane to make sure the roof deck is sound, smooth, dry and provides positive drainage. Generally the minimum approved slope for steep slope applications is 2″ per 12″.

is your roof winter ready?
Getting your roof ready for winter involves more than just your roof. There are the gutters that need to be cleaned and checked, making sure they will safely remove the water away from the roof and house. If you plan on using your fireplace or woodstove you will need to have the unit and flue inspected to make sure they are safe and clean. Don’t forget about any dryer, bath, or stove vents that are important to be functioning correctly to remove the smoke and moisture from the interior of your home, especially in winter when it is more tightly sealed.
Back to the roof and why it is so important to make sure it is in good shape for the up and coming winter months. Wind, ice dams, debris, snow, often cause water to be forced or diverted into areas that can cause leaks. If flashings are lifted, or singles are not laying flat, or debris is backing up water flow on the roof, all of these roof problems can result in a sudden leak.

Roofing and venting have always had an important relationship, both for keeping the house comfortable, avoiding mold, preventing Ice Dams and allowing the roofing shingles to perform as long as possible.
It is common but not correct, where we find areas of the roof where the builder has allowed for air intake and exhaust on the roof, only to block it all with insulation.
A baffle is a way to push and keep down the insulation in order to create an air space that allows air to travel under the decking. The edge venting [soffit vents] are the intake for the roof and the exhaust venting [ridge vent] allow the warm moist air to exit.
So when you hear about baffles and venting, they go hand in hand. Make sure when you add venting, the air can freely enter and exit from your roofs attic or vault. If not – you may need to add baffles.
